Stories of Empowered People with Disabilities

Jiviben - Learning to stay strong

Jiviben Badharbhai Parmar (42 years, village Uber) stays with her brother and sister in law. Her disability restricts her to walk straight, but that never stopped her from dreaming of standing on her own feet.

An Aatapi field worker gave her information about her rights and entitlements, and helped her to access them. Aatapi became a part of her and her family's life. She broke out of her self-imposed boundaries and the four walls of her home to meet new people and try new things.

stories

In an Aatapi training program she learned how to tailor and successfully applied for a sewing machine to the Department of Social Security. She started financially contributing to her family as she took small respected jobs. Today she is living with self dignity, respected by friends and the community.

Inspired by support groups in other villages, she took the initiative and formed a support group in her own village and gathered women to form their own ones. Jiviben says about her leadership: "Badhano aadar ane prem male to bahu saaru lage che." (I feel very good to receive everyone's support groups from other villages that gives me the courage to take on new challenges.)

With the help of a low interest loan from the Bank of Baroda through Joint Liability Group she repaired her house. Her brother and sister in law are very proud of her achievements.

Now she stands on her own feet, is independent and holds her head up high!

Role Model Balwantbhai: Diligent Leader

Balwantbhai, 23 years old, from Uchhad village of Jambusar Block, never lost his enthusiasm towards life in spite of being struck with polio at a young age. He took technical education in ITI and joined Piramal Glass as full time employee. However, his heart was constantly concerned about the rights and entitlements of persons with disabilities. He did everything he could to support the differently-abled persons in his village. Through this, he came in touch with Aatapi and volunteered to help in the formation of village level groups, identification of leaders at the village level, organizing camps for obtaining disability certificates and advocacy for rights at the district and state level.

He is a constant source of inspiration for other persons with disabilities and even the Aatapi team. He played a critical role in the organization of the district level sports meetings. He completed the online registration formalities of 40 sports persons, had discussions with government officials, applied for the permission and managed the other formalities to organize this event at short notice. He is an active member of the farmers' group and is an advocate and practitioner of innovative farming technologies. Ever ready to learn he is member of disability Advocacy Group.

His consistent and persistent efforts to unite persons with disabilities under one umbrella has resulted in formation of Viklang Parivartan Sangathan, a block level advocacy group.

His diligent work is a constant source of inspiration to everyone around him.
